Lunch Talk: Does free will matter for democracy?

Democracy is founded on the premise of free choice by it‘s citizens. What happens to this premise in the age of digital manipulation, not by other humans but by abstract algorithms? How do tacit beliefs on the question of free will shape how we judge social media or the global drift towards populism?

We will make the case that tacit conceptions of free will matter, and that a functioning democracy needs to be built on a scientifically-supported conception of free will. We argue that, such a conception is indeed emerging, outline its key features and its implications.
